What is Success?
I got thinking about what is success following a conversation I had with my Mum recently. She said she had not been ‘successful’, which I in turn chuckled at!, As she is the most loved and inspiring lady I know! With two daughters (and their partners), plus two grandchildren who all adore her, and simply love spending time with her! Anyway, it got me thinking well what actually is success? If you look the definition up it states ‘fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame,’ but for me this is way to narrow as a definition.
Success for me is the same as acclaimed author Maya Angelou who said ‘Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.’
It is about living a life with Integrity, giving when you don’t have to, caring for others, living authentically, empowering others, managing hardship and serving with humility.
I have worked hard to achieve personal objectives in life; I worked two jobs in my early twenties as I wanted a sports car, I went to college (night classes) to gain further qualifications as I wanted to own a cottage in the countryside (and needed better paid work), I took a pay cut to get a role in an environment where I hoped there would be more opportunities, I worked my way up from an Administrator to Director (I always overpaid my mortgage as once I had achieved the Director role, I realised I didn’t really like it that much!)
Success is about living life to the drumbeat of your own heart and doing what is right for you at any given time. I am lucky enough to have been able to walk away from the Director role, and am spending more time with my family, and every day I think of new personal objectives to help me be successful, whether that be fitter, healthier, happier, kinder – the list goes on!
And there is a message for my lovely Mum “Success isn’t; just about what you accomplish in your life, it’s about what you inspire others to do” because you have inspired me to be the best possible version of myself, always to work hard and do the right thing, care for others, be proud of who I am and who I am becoming, to treat myself and others with respect. I just hope I can inspire my poppets the way you have inspired me. We love you and you are incredibly successful at being a thoroughly amazing Mum, Mammar, Mother in Law and Authentic Human! x
